What Is the Amsler Grid?
The Amsler Grid is a simple pattern of horizontal and vertical lines with a dot in the center. It has been used by ophthalmologists for decades to detect distortions in central vision โ often the earliest detectable sign of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other retinal conditions.
AMD affects over 20 million Americans, and early detection dramatically improves outcomes. This test takes less than 3 minutes and you can do it right now, at home.
What You'll Need
Your reading glasses or contacts if you normally use them โ the test must be done with vision corrected for reading distance.
Something to cover one eye โ your hand, a piece of paper, or an eye patch. You'll test each eye separately.
A way to measure 14 inches โ a standard ruler, or simply know that 14 inches is roughly the distance from your nose to your outstretched hand. We can send you a free measuring tape if you'd like one.
