What Is the Amsler Grid?

The Amsler Grid is a simple pattern of horizontal and vertical lines with a dot in the center. It has been used by ophthalmologists for decades to detect distortions in central vision — often the earliest detectable sign of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other retinal conditions.

What You'll Need

Your reading glasses or contacts if you normally use them — the test must be done with vision corrected for reading distance.

Something to cover one eye — your hand, a piece of paper, or an eye patch. You'll test each eye separately.

A way to measure 14 inches — a standard ruler, or simply know that 14 inches is roughly the distance from your nose to your outstretched hand. We can send you a free measuring tape if you'd like one.

Before You Begin

Please read these simple instructions before you look at the grid. Taking 60 seconds to do this correctly makes a real difference.

📍 Sit approximately 14 inches from your screen — about arm's length from elbow to wrist, or roughly the length of a standard ruler.
  1. Put on your reading glasses or contacts if you normally use them.
  2. Cover your LEFT eye completely with your hand or a piece of paper. Keep both eyes open — just cover one.
  3. With your RIGHT eye, look directly at the center dot. Do not let your eye wander from the dot.
  4. While staring at the dot, notice the grid lines in your peripheral vision. Do they appear straight? Are any lines wavy, blurred, or missing? Any dark or blank spots?
  5. Then switch: Cover your RIGHT eye and repeat with your LEFT eye.
Important: The test is only valid with corrective lenses in place (if you normally wear them). Testing without them simply reveals your refractive error — not macular changes.

The Amsler Grid

Stare at the center dot. Notice everything in your peripheral vision without moving your eye from the dot.

  1. Sit 14 inches from the screen.
  2. Glasses/contacts on if you use them.
  3. Cover one eye completely.
  4. Stare at the red center dot — do not let your eye move from it.
  5. While looking at the dot, notice the grid around it. Are all lines straight? Any wavy, missing, or blurry areas? Any blank spots?
  6. Switch eyes and repeat.
